In his first lesson with jamplay.com, Tosin discusses the 8 string guitar. He talks playing, setup and stylistic approach to what he considers “a guitar with lots of strings.” Visit jamplay, com for Tosin’s entire artist series.
The 7th and 8th strings are lower register strings. The standard 8 string tuning has those additional strings tuned in 3rds like a standard six string. However Tosin tunes his 7th string a 5th below the 6th and his 8th string an octave below his 6th. That allows him to add roots and 5ths from within the same six string positions.
I write most of my music in Dropped-D … would it be unreasonable to assume that the low F# wouldn’t flub out if I tuned it down to D (two full steps lower)? It would be the ultimate convenience to have the full bass range for Dropped-D tuned rock or metal, all on one instrument…
tosin is a genius. i love metal, but i admire he doesn’t neccesarily have to use distortion for an 8 string. his approach is unique to anything i’ve ever seen.
you’d definately need a 30” scale to tune that low and have any definition. i’d recomment an Agile 8 string, they come in the 30” scale and dont cost a rediculous amount.

Abasi is beast

This dude is absolutely incredible musician, I wonder if he still uses his custom 8 string though…I guess the ibanez is a bit better for touring.
29. January 2010 at 6:25 pm
He does have his other guitar. He claimed his Ibanez was a little flat without much brilliance comparably speaking.
